Here is company that produces password recovery software for the Microsoft Office software along with Microsoft Money. They even have a software package for unmasking passwords on your PC. It supports Internet Explorer and really any application that masks your passwords like Outlook Express, VPN, Dial up etc.

Prices start at $25 for single downloaded copies for home use with business versions being slightly higher. They have a suite version that includes Word, Excel and Access starting at $50 for the home version. There is a trial version available that you can test with… as long as the password is 4 characters or shorter.

The Ultimate in Password Management

Roboform. This utility is essential in my mind. It will keep you from needing to recover your passwords later down the line. I have personally used this software for the past 3 years. When you store a login in a what they call a passcard, it stores not only the username and password, but it also stores the URL and any other form data on that page you want.

Once you go to a site, lets use PayPal for instance, it will pop up the autofill form for PayPal because it matched the URL. This also helps prevent you from becoming “phished“. Another use of passcards is you can use that as bookmarks. When you click on a passcard it will take you right to the site and log you in automatically. The price for Roboform Pro is $29.95 for a 1 computer license. There are many other variations of the software for PDA’s and such, make sure to check them out.

You can download the trial version of Roboform Pro here.

Then check out www.defaultpassword.com. This site offers a search of over 1200 default passwords for various pieces of hardware and software. There is a validation field for each entry although most don’t seem to be validated but that is probably because the list is populated by it’s visitors.

If you’re on the go, there is a WAP version available at wap.defaultpassword.com. Enjoy!

Password Now

This site specializes in document password recovery. Word, Excel, Access etc. Here is how it works:

  • Download small executable file
  • Run that file and select document you need password recovered from
  • Follow instructions on web page that is brought up

Now the instructions will be one of two items. It will either error out and recommend their downloadable software suite for you to purchase ($15 - $149) the higher price being for all their software in one bundle.

OR

It will give you instructions on how to pay (price varies based on document, it was $19 for an excel document I tested), along with instructions on what exactly is going to happen and their guarantees. It’s important to note that you do not have to upload the actual document to them for this service which is nice seeing as most documents that are password protected are that way due to sensitive data.

Login Recovery
This is a great site for those people that forgot or lost your windows login password and want to recover it versus resetting it. I actually was creating a site to do this very thing, but I guess I was too slow!

The site offers free service (2 day turnaround) or priority service (sub 10 minutes). I have actually used this service (although it was with the previous owner) and it correctly recovered the passwords I had lost. Priority service will run you about $20 (US).
